About Us
Our History
The Lord Roberts began life as The High Cross Pub, built in 1936/37 by renowned architect William Beedham. Its distinctive Art Deco design remains a defining feature, making it one of Nottingham’s most visually striking pubs.
Over the decades, it has earned a reputation as a popular theatre bar and a cornerstone of Nottingham’s social scene—particularly within the LGBTQ+ community.
In October 2019, the pub underwent a stunning transformation. The addition of the iconic Lord Roberts neon sign and exterior festoon lighting elevated its presence, giving it the feel of a West End theatre and making it a true standout in Hockley.
Meet the Landlord: Craig Pennington
Craig Pennington’s journey in hospitality began at just 13 years old in his hometown of Blackpool, working at The Golden Grill café. His passion for the industry quickly grew, leading him to The Strand Hotel, where he trained as a chef under Ron and Linda Critchley.
During his time there, Craig experienced a unique moment in television history—meeting members of the Coronation Street cast when the famous Alan Bradley tram scene was filmed nearby.
Craig later worked at the world-famous Flamingo Club under Basil Newby before moving to Nottingham at 21. There, he co-founded Thompson’s Coffee Shop & Deli on Pelham Street—Nottingham’s first designer coffee shop.
After eight successful years, Craig moved on to roles including:
Manager at Jade Shoes
Assistant Manager at Scruffy’s on Derby Road
General Manager roles in the Lace Market and at CAST in Nottingham Playhouse (where he spent six years)
He then transitioned into hospitality training and assessment, working with New College Nottingham, West Nottingham College, and Innovate Awarding—helping to shape the next generation of hospitality professionals.
It was during his time at Innovate Awarding that Craig attended a Punch open day after being invited through Find My Pub. There, he discovered The Lord Roberts—and instantly knew it was the perfect fit.
The rest, as they say, is history.
