Robert’s Story
Lord Robert may be the face of the pub today, but his story began far from Nottingham in Cambridgeshire, England, where he was born on 16th November 2019.
Born with a hernia, Robert had a difficult start in life and couldn’t be rehomed until 24th April 2020. Once his breeder, Andrea, received the wonderful news that he was finally fit and healthy, she listed him on Pets4Homes to begin the search for his forever home.
At that exact moment, Stevie was browsing the site looking for a Schnauzer after the heartbreaking loss of his own dog just a few months before taking over The Lord Roberts. Spotting a cute little face online, he turned to Craig and asked, “What about a Wauzer?” - a cross between a Westie and a Schnauzer.
The advert had only been live for seconds when Stevie called Andrea, and plans were quickly made to travel to Cambridgeshire the very next day - despite the country being deep in national lockdown.
The moment they met him, they fell completely in love.
Robert soon arrived at The Lord Roberts, settling into what would become his forever home. With the pub temporarily closed during lockdown, Craig and Stevie had plenty of time to bond with their newest family member before reopening the doors on 5th July 2020.
During those quiet months, Craig had an idea that would soon become a huge part of the pub’s identity. After naming the dog Robert in honour of the pub, he decided it was time for a friendlier face to represent The Lord Roberts - replacing the rather stern image of Frederick Sleigh Roberts with their charismatic miniature schnauzer instead.
Craig enlisted photographer friend Saul to help bring the idea to life, and the rest is history. In fact, Saul still describes the shoot as “the best job ever.”
